Dance Philosophy
Philosophy

The East End Dance Studio's objective is to present a pleasant environment where each student's creative talent is recognized and incorporated into the disciplined art of dance, acting and/or singing. The aim within these disciplines is to help students acquire not only an appreciation of the arts but also to learn the various techniques and styles. Classes are kept at an appropriate size so each child gets individual attention for correction and encouragement. With the correct training, the students will develop the necessary skills to go on to a professional level of dance, acting or singing as well as gain more self-confidence, learn teamwork and develop innovative thinking.
Class Descriptions
Creative Movement Age 3

The children use their own imagination to inspire and create movement. This class covers qualities of movement such as floating, rolling, wiggle, stiff, etc. Movement in space, levels and direction are explored. Isolation movements for each part of the body, pantomime, dancing to stories, ballet terminology and rhythm for dance (learning to count to music) are introduced. Moods to music are explored as the children discover how music inspires movement. Many props are used to enhance movement and inspire creativity. These include scarves, pom-poms, streamers and hats. This class in fun for boys and girls.

Introduction to Dance I & II Ages 4 & 5

Introduction to Dance I: These children will explore basic ballet steps and pre-jazz and rhythm movement and beginner tap steps. Our carefully planned curriculum is presented in a fun and entertaining way which enhance coordination, musicalilty and creative ability.
Introduction to Dance II: continues where Introduction to Dance I left off. It works on all the same skills but at a more advanced level so the students are ready to begin a traditional ballet, tap or jazz class.

Ballet

Ballet class is probably the most important class your child can take and is highly recommended to be the first class of choice. The vocabulary and steps are found is just about every form of dance. Introducing children to ballet is a fun and uplifting experience. This class teaches the basic steps at the barre and center floor. We will also have fun by introducing character dance ( this is the folkloric portion of ballet). Pantomime, French vocabulary and even some imaginative dance will be explored. Ages 6 and 7 are in a more basic beginner ballet program which touches on the above but not as in depth as the ballet program for ages 8, 9 and 10. Teen and adult levels are offered. Pointe class can only be taken upon recommendation of the teacher as there are many important factors which must be considered individually before going on pointe.

Tap

This classic dance form that dates back to the 1930's can safely be learned by even the youngest or oldest dancer. Class will include a warm-up through all the fundamental steps, then will progress to traveling exercises emphasizing rhythm, coordindation, speed, style and clarity of sounds.

Jazz

The children's Jazz division is a separate program from the teen/adult division. At this time a child's body is still developing and it is essential and advisable for a child to attend classes such as Ballet for a genuine foundation for physical training and dance vocabulary. This is why we teach a pre-jazz program for age 6&7 which stresses finding center and correct alienment. Many children today refuse Ballet for the faster pace Jazz and it is the teachers responsibility to train the student as to proper leg and foot positions. The Jazz class offers a very exciting upbeat warm-up in coordination and isolation movements and combinations. They will enjoy doing the current funky style of Jazz, broadway Jazz and Lyrical Jazz. We are careful that all movements given in a Jazz class are appropriate for the childs age level.

Hip-Hop

This high spirited class offers the latest in street-funk and at times combined with jazz technique to the latest music. The emphasis is on rhythm and isolation movements. Each instructor has their own style and often poping and locking techniques are introduced. This program is only for age 8 and up. Again we stress traditional technique first to make a more well rounded dancer.

Modern/Contemporary dance

An extremely expressive form of dance based on a parallel position of the feet and hips and an emphasis on gravity and "down to the floor work." Students learn both the Humphrey-Limon technique of breath and suspension as well as an introduction to Martha Grahams contract and release style. This class will be presenting works that range from lyrically romantic to boldly experimental. Be barefoot, be daring!

Observation of classes

Famililes are encouraged to support their dancer by attending performances and showing interest in their class development. However, many dancers feel somewhat uncomfortable and distracted if they are constantly viewed and evaluated. This may inhibit learning and take away from the personal relationship between the student and teacher. Since I understand the parents' interest and joy in seeing their child dance, I will hold one formal parent visitation during the year. This is usually for the younger ages of 3,4,5, 6 and 7 year olds. The studio has a curtain in front of a large viewing window which can be opened for viewing during class.
